Abhainn Dearg Island Distillery
This is a new Island whisky distillery on the island of Lewis which lies in the far corner of Western Europe in the Scottish Outer Hebrides. Abhainn Dearg translated from Gaelic means Red River Distillery and is now the most westerly whisky distillery in Scotland. Although Abhainn Dearg is new to Uig, whisky production in this area goes back hundreds of years, just not officially. This is well out of the way of excise man and illicit whisky production has been taking place here forever. Indeed 2011 seen the 1st legal single malt whisky to be produced in the Outer Hebrides for 170 years.
There is no history to this distillery which makes a refreshing change from all the others. There was a distillery in Stornaway but it stopped legal whisky distillation in 1840, rumour has it only the legal part stopped. Abhainn Dearg Single Malt was brought to market at the ‘whisky Olympics’ or the Royal National Mod as it is otherwise known. This is an annual Gaelic speaking festival which takes place every year in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.
The aim of Abhainn Dearg is to maintain its independence and provide single malt for locals, visitors and those who support with internet purchases.
Taste: The Spirit of Lewis is drinkable despite its young age and has fruit, herbs with a gentle spice to taste.
