Allt-a-Bhainne Speyside Whisky Distillery
This newbie was founded in 1975 by Chivas Brothers Ltd but was later bought out by global giant Pernod Ricard. The main purpose of Allt-á-Bhainne, (pronounced Ollt-err-VANE) was to ensure supply for Chivas Brothers successful blended whiskies, Chivas Regal being the most noteworthy. The name comes from the Gaelic, ‘Allt a’bhainne’ which means ‘burn of milk’. Like Aberlour its location is close to the mountain range, Ben Rinnes. The water source is up near the peak of the mountains.
There have been a few independent bottling’s however the purpose of the distillery remains producing the ingredients for Chivas Regal. The distillery had a brief period of closure between 2002 and 2005 after the market became saturated. Allt-á-Bhainne survival is dependent on the success of Chivas Regal which at the time of writing is going well and Allt-á-Bhainne distillery is producing 3.5 million litres per annum.
Taste: A simple malt that packs a punch without obvious flaws. Many describe it as a typical blender’s whisky.
