Arran Island Whisky Distillery
Located on the bonnie banks of Lochranza on the North of island of Arran the distillery was founded in 1993 by the ex-managing director of Chivas Brothers. The Arran distillery is the only one on the island known as ‘Scotland in Miniature’ because of the Mountains, Lochs, Glens and Castles. The building of the distillery was put on hold while a pair of nesting Golden Eagles took up residence. In Scotland the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) are more powerful than the government never mind the Whisky lobby, so no work could proceed. Now however the Eagles can often be seen in the local vicinity which adds to the experience for tourists visiting the distillery.
Arran of course had distilleries before this one was built in 1993 however they were all illegal. According to legend as many as 50 illegal distilleries on Arran were hidden away from the taxman. Arran was a perfect location away from police on an island with easy access to the more populous central belt of Scotland.
Arran is now producing a range of whiskies and does not use artificial colourings or peat in production so as clean a product as possible is produced. This distillery is ideal for a visit if you are in Scotland on a short trip with regular ferries from Ardrossan in Ayrshire. The Distillery now has a relaxing bar where you can enjoy a wee dram looking out at ‘Scotland in Miniature’
Taste: A clean soft mild peaty taste not too strong with a complexity which belies its youth.
