Benromach Speyside Whisky Distillery
Just north of Forres in Speyside this malt whisky is produced now by just 2 people and is the smallest distillery in Speyside. Benromach (Gaelic for ‘shaggy mountain’) was founded in 1898 and takes its water supply from the nearby Chapeltown springs. A chequered history opening and closing throughout the 20th century it was eventually mothballed in 1983 however it was re-opened in 1998 by no other than Prince Charles after investment from Gordon & MacPhail.
Benromach is strong in spirit and has a higher peat content than most Speyside whiskies and has a claim to fame as the 1st released organic whisky in 2006 (as approved by the Soil Association). There are now a number of Benromach bottling’s to enjoy.
Taste: The now popular 10 year old is a winter warmer with roasted nuts on the palate.
