Convalmore Speyside Whisky Distillery
Located in Dufftown in the heart of the Speyside whisky making industry Convalmore is one of the ‘7 stills of Dufftown’ the other 6 are Balvenie, Glenfiddich, Parkmore, Dufftown, Glendullan, and Mortlach. Whisky making is everything in Dufftown and the picturesque location at the foot of the Conval Hills with the banks of the rivers Dulland and Fiddich nearby it is perfect for whisky production. Extracting water from the Dufftown springs Convalmore was founded in 1884 by Convalmore-Glenlivet Distillery Company Ltd and was the fourth distillery to be established in Dufftown.
Twenty years after it was established Convalmore was bought by W & P Lowrie & Co Ltd who were Glaswegian whisky merchants but they lost control to James Buchanan a year later. Just five years later the distillery has a serious fire which required the distillery to be rebuilt.
Distillers Company Ltd took control in 1925 and they refurbished and expanded the facilities in the seventies. Convalmore was providing single malt for blends such as Black & White and also contributed to others. Few single malt whiskies were ever produced at Convalmore however a 28 year old and 24 year old from the seventies can be purchased at a price. Any other bottlings have been by independent bottlers.
In1990 the property was purchased by William Grant & Sons for warehousing facilities and still at least has this link to the whisky industry.
Taste: The 28 year old has a strong sherry taste with a hint of liquorice and has a dry nutty finish.
