Glenfarclas Speyside Whisky Distillery
Glenfarclas! (Spirit of Independence) Even the mention of the name should fill your taste buds with anticipation. Originally founded in the year 1836 at Recherlich Farm, Ballandalloch, Banffshire when a tenant farmer Robert Hay was granted a licence to produce single malt whisky.
After Robert died the distillery passed to John Grant a local cattle dealer in 1865 for the grand sum of £511. 19s. The Grants let out the distillery to John Smith for the first 5 years. When he left to set up his own distillery at Cragganmore the Grant family took over and are still running this historic family owned distillery in 2012.
Like all distilleries there have been many changes over the years but the basic method employed at Glenfarclas of direct heating of the stills is still in use today. Together with pure water from the Ben Rinnes Mountain and almost 200 years of experience ensure that this distillery always produces an extremely fine single malt whisky.
Many years ago at the beginning of the 20th centaury another distiller wrote to the Grants of Glenfarclas “of all the whiskies, malt is king and of all the kings Glenfarclas reigns supreme”. The Grant family down the generations have by hard work and good management ensured that this is still the case today and a visit to this distillery and its famous tasting room is highly recommended to all malt whisky connoisseurs.
