The scotch whisky industry is in an exciting period of growth with sales in the emerging countries growing at unbelievable levels due the aspirational quality of Scotch whisky. In particular the sales of single malt whisky have been growing in all markets, mature and emerging. This boom has come at a time when internet sales are also growing at circa 20% year on year. Although it is still unusual for people to buy whisky online the market is growing. The reason people are attracted to buying whisky online is that they have access to a much larger range of whiskies, not just the standard whiskies which are stocked in bars the world over. The whisky lover wants to present something unusual to their friends to show off or simply to open them up to the variation in the whisky industry. No longer do the Irish and the Scots dominate international sales, the Japanese, Indians and Swedes are making inroads into the international whisky market.
Indeed the birth of the Scottish Whisky Store came from an observation in Sweden where alcohol sales are still heavily controlled by the government and sold through state owned stores called ‘systembolaget’ the range of whisky here was often limited and it was difficult to get a hold of more specialist whiskies. With so many whisky products on offer it is difficult to stock all of them.
