Many an imagination has been spurred on after having a few of drams of whisky and the water of life itself has picked up some outlandish stories over the years. The Scottish Whisky Store has picked out a few hear for you to share with your friends perhaps after they themselves have had one too many (Scottish Whisky Store supports responsible whisky consumption) or they are just gullable. The most common is that Angels steal 4% from each barrel of whisky each year, this is often referred to as Angels Tax or the Angles Share (title of a new whisky related Scottish movie). This was believed by many in years gone by to explain why the liquid volume of a barrel of whisky goes down every year it matures. Latterly evaporation provided the real explanation. Bottling the whisky not only stops the evaporation process but stops the Angels nicking it.
Another popular scotch whisky myth is that Scots used to pour whisky on the fire to determine if the alcohol content was right, if not it was sold cheaply to distillery workers. Really? You show me a Scotsman who throws whisky on the fire and I will show you a politician who doesn’t lie.
However our personal favourite is that God invented whisky so that the Scots wouldn’t take over the world.
