Although Signatory is a well-known independent whisky bottler in terms of the Scottish Whisky Industry they are relative newcomers with Signatory only being founded in 1988 by Brian and Andrew. Today Signatory is the 2nd largest independent bottler in Scotland behind Gordon & MacPhail. The name apparently derives from an initial marketing idea to get famous people to sign their name on the bottlings of each cask, however sales grew much quicker than the brothers could get famous people to sign them. The business was originally operated from a whisky bond in Leith which is a historic port on the edge of Edinburgh and is hugely significant in the history of whisky. It is also believed to be the place where the first game of golf was played contributing to two great Scottish exports.
The growth was so rapid that the Symington brothers started bottling single malt scotch whisky and build their own bottling plant in Newhaven which is located only a mile from Leith. The main of independent bottlers is to buy whisky casks from distilleries and release them at different ages and strengths from the distillery itself creating a unique whisky only available in limited quantities. Signatory’s Unchillfiltered Collection has been hugely successful and you can now buy Signatory whisky online at the Scottish Whisky Store. Signatory now owns Erdradour the smallest whisky distillery in Scotland, but also the most visited by tourists.
