Not the first place you would perhaps associate with whisky production however the Swedish whisky production has exploded in recent times. The Swedes have been consuming large quantities of mainly Scottish whisky for some time however the opening of Mackmyra Distillery (Destilleri) in 1999 has led to a string of new whisky distilleries opening in Sweden. These include Spirit of Hven, Smögen Distillery, Grythyttan Distillery and Gotland Distillery which is based on Sweden’s (and the Baltics) largest island. As most of these new Swedish distilleries have opened post 2000 many are still to release their first batch of whisky. When you consider the success of Japan’s whisky sector it is no surprise the Swedes want to get into the market especially when there are so many home grown consumers.
The main whisky coming out of Sweden is Mackmyra which currently dominates the Swedish market. Their first export of 4000 bottles to the UK sold out fast and MackMyra has been expanding ever since. Mackmyra is located about 2 hours north of Stockholm and is also the most northerly whisky distillery in the world. Mackmyra produce two types of Swedish single malt whisky one is a smooth and fruity the other a smoky with more of an edge to it.
If you are looking to buy whiskey online today the Scottish Whisky Store currently has a limited range of Swedish single malt whisky available online and will be adding to our range over the coming months.
