Yes, you have read the title correctly an Aberdeen University student has come up with the idea of a Whisky Day to be held for the 1st time on the 18th May 2013. Yes and you thought every day was a whisky day! There seems to be a day for everything these days so why not an international whisky day celebrating the water of life. As an online whisky retailer we are not going to complain about new ideas to promote the greatest drink on earth.
A test event which ran in March attracted an audience of 20,000 at 180 events held across the world however next year’s event will dwarf the test event as the Scottish Government, Scotland Food and Drink and the Scottish Whisky Experience have got behind the concept. The Scotch whisky industry is never slow to jump any opportunity for whisky brand development and World Whisky Day will be no different.
Blair Bowman the man behind the event reminded us that 200,000 people visit Ireland on St Patricks day to enjoy a Guinness or 2 so why not a national whisky day. With Robert Burns night on the 25th January each year, Tartan day on the 6th April and St Andrews day on the 30th November aren’t we Scots over doing it a bit. Not at all says the organisers. They say that whisky is a truly international drink and comes in many forms not only Scottish whisky but Irish whiskey, Bourbon, Indian, Japanese etc etc.
